Alcohol and Drug use is a serious problem in High Schools and College Campuses throughout the country. Statistical data show that 72% of our teenagers have consumed alcohol prior to graduating from high school.

According to the Core Institute, 73% of students in college drink at least from time to time. In 2010, one in four young people, ages 18-34 consumed four or more alcoholic beverages in the span of a few hours. This is called binge drinking and is usually associated with peer pressure and parties.

Often people associate alcohol abuse with uneducated, blue collar workers. However, the statistics show that the higher the level of the education, the higher the level of alcohol consumption. Individuals who have accomplished a high school education or less, 36.8% {were current drinkers in 2010. However, college graduates ranked in at 69.1% of current drinkers during that time period.

What Does Drug Abuse In America look like?

Around 12.8 million Americans aged 12 and up, are involved with illegal drugs. Government statistics show that drug overdoses resulting in death, as recently as 2009, were more than car fatalities. Abuse of prescription drugs has dramatically increased over the years as new and more potent have been introduced into the marketplace.

Substance abuse in young adults is associated with depression, poor performance in school and often violence. Increasing prescription drug use and addiction is a growing trend among students on college campuses. Prescription drugs seem to be fairly easily accessible and students use them to overcome shyness, to help relax and also to help them concentrate on tests. Prescription drugs are often used to increase energy levels when playing sports.

Yes. The West currently has the highest degree of drug use at 11%. Then it follows with 9.4% in the Northeast, 8.2% in the Midwest and 7.8% in the South.
