Alaska's law enforcement community sees that the greatest contributing factor to violent crimes, including domestic violence and sexual assault, is alcohol abuse. Many of the accidental deaths that occur in Alaska are alcohol/drug related; especially in the western regions of the state. Of cases initiated by the Alaska State Troopers in 2011, 33.6% involved alcohol/drugs. Of all violent crime cases, 59.5% involved alcohol or drugs.

The legal drinking age in Alaska is 21 and you should expect to be carded (asked for ID) Restaurants sell beer and wine; some have full bars that serve hard liquor. Packaged alcohol, beer, and wine are sold only in licensed stores, not in grocery stores, but these are common and are open with extended hours. By state law, bars don't have to close until 5am, however many communities close at 2am. Open containers are not allowed in your car. Driving Under the Influence carries a mandatory 3-day jail time for the first offense. More than 100 rural communities are "dry" or "damp" (prohibiting the sale but not possession of alcohol.
